What started out as a Winscosin 2005 Buell® Lightning® XB9S has been made into something completely different in the hands of Japanese customizer Hideya Togashi.
Inspired by Joe Petrali’s land-speed recordbreaking Knucklehead and the legendary Harley-Davidson® “Lucifer’s Hammer” race bike, Hideya has created a work of art that knows no language barrier.
Though Buells are not common in Japan, he says it’s not difficult to find parts for this and other American customs he creates for his Hide Motorcycle shop in Kanagawa. The challenge, he says, “is to find cool parts.” So most of the components – such as the aluminum alloy gas tank, seat, and front cowling – he fabricates himself. Others are highly modified stock components. And while there may not seem to be much left of the original Lightning, be assured that the Buell spirit still lives inside it. Hideya indicates the clean lines, good balance, and low center of gravity as points of pride. Sound Buell principles all. No matter their national origin.
